Volkswagen’s Tiguan is a European take on an American classic—the SUV.
The VW Tiguan is quite the unique compact crossover in that it is one of the only compact crossovers to offer three-row versatility without the bulkiness that typically accompanies an SUV. The Volkswagen Tiguan impressively fits up to seven passengers. It has plenty of cargo space, and with the rear seats folded down, the cargo capacity increases even more. It offers athletic handling, and its cabin has plenty of smart technology features—one of the most well-rounded choices, in our opinion.
The VW Tiguan is a sporty, fun-to-drive SUV with a smooth, willing engine and a well-coordinated automatic transmission.
The 2021 Tiguan is available in five trim levels. All Tiguan trims include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert in their driver-assist and active safety features. For 2021, adaptive cruise control is included starting with the SE trim. Lane keep-assist and rain-sensing windshield wipers are added on the SEL trim.
Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and front-wheel drive comes standard, but Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is optional.
Volkswagen has given its compact SUV a handsome styling refresh to help it look at home alongside the restyled Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport mid-size SUVs. New LED headlamps, revised grille and bumpers, and new wheel designs give the Tiguan a more modern appearance. The Tiguan’s cabin has a steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls. Heated seats and a digital gauge display are now standard across the lineup. All models except the base S also receive a new touch-sensitive climate control panel, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a semi-autonomous driving mode that VW calls Travel Assist.
Volkswagen’s infotainment system is sleek and features touch buttons integrated into a large glass screen. The system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so drivers who prefer their smartphone’s familiar interface to Volkswagen’s system are in luck; a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard.
Forward-collision alert with automatic braking and a blind-spot warning system are also standard.
